Plan each hardscaping layer separately
A path or patio can contain a surface layer, bedding, and a base over the same footprint. Calculate these components separately because their depths and purchasing units differ. Gravel may be quoted by volume or weight, concrete by delivered volume or mixed bag yield, and pavers by pieces or packaged coverage.
Choose the right inputs
Use the Gravel Calculator with a supplier-provided bulk density when estimating tons. Use Concrete for volume from a specified thickness, and Paver for individual pieces plus bedding and base volumes. The example layer depths are editable inputs, not a design specification for your soil, drainage, climate, or intended load.
From estimate to order
Keep measured quantities separate from purchasing allowances. Save the dimensions, units, product details, and supplier assumptions with your estimate so that you can explain or revise it later. Round up only when selecting the package size or order increment that you will actually buy. Check the result against a simple worked example before placing an order.
