A little planning. A better yard.
Yard Calc Lab helps homeowners turn outdoor measurements into material estimates. Our ten free calculators cover lawns, soil and mulch, hardscaping, fencing, and landscaping budgets. Each tool keeps its inputs, result, and supporting explanation on one page so that you can see what a quantity depends on.
Calculation methodology
We begin with simple geometry: rectangle area is length times width, triangle area is half the base times perpendicular height, and circle area uses half the entered diameter as its radius. Volume tools multiply area by layer depth and convert units. Coverage tools divide the required area or volume by the product coverage you enter. Whole bags, rolls, panels, and pavers are rounded up at the final count.
Material density, package coverage, layer depths, prices, and allowances are assumptions supplied through editable fields. The defaults demonstrate how the tools work; they are not local prices or universal installation recommendations. An estimate cannot account for site conditions or product characteristics that you have not entered.
Editorial policy
Supporting articles explain the formula, show worked examples, identify common measurement errors, and describe the limits of each tool. Examples use illustrative dimensions and prices. When an article gives external planting or installation guidance, its source is linked and the applicable context is stated. Mathematical examples are calculated from the displayed formulas rather than presented as field trials.
We do not claim an independently verified professional author, reviewer, qualification, or installation test. The site is published under the Yard Calc Lab name. A review date indicates the date stated for the page’s formula and source review; it does not mean that a qualified professional approved your project.
Corrections and updates
Report an error to contact@yardcalclab.com with the page address, inputs, units, and the result you expected. This makes it possible to reproduce a calculation and distinguish a formula issue from a coverage or rounding assumption. Source guidance and product information can change, so check the linked reference and current product label before ordering.
Using estimates responsibly
Keep your measurement sketch and supplier quote alongside the result. Confirm order increments, density, coverage, and delivery charges with the supplier. For structural or site-specific decisions, obtain guidance appropriate to the work. The calculators estimate quantities and budgets; they do not determine legal boundaries, structural suitability, or guaranteed project costs.
