Fence Calculator

Estimate panels and posts for one straight fence run.

Subtract the gate opening from one straight run, divide by maximum panel span, and round up. An 80 ft run with a 4 ft opening and 8 ft spans gives a minimum estimate of 10 panels.

How to use this calculator

  1. Draw the straight run and mark both ends and the gate location. Enter the full run length and the combined gate opening in feet.
  2. Enter the maximum panel span appropriate to your selected product and layout. This value is a quantity input, not a structural recommendation.
  3. Enter panel and post prices. Compare the estimate with your drawn layout, rounding the separate sections on each side of a gate before ordering.

Understanding the formula

Panels = round up((run − gate opening) ÷ maximum span). Posts = panels + 1, plus 1 when a gate opening is included.

The tool calculates a minimum panel count by dividing the combined net fencing length by span. It estimates posts as panels plus one, with one additional post when a gate opening is present. That simplified count cannot resolve the exact gate location, corner sharing, changes in height, or multiple separate openings. The drawn installation layout takes precedence.

Worked examples

Straight run without a gate

A 64 ft run at 8 ft maximum spans needs 8 panels and an estimated 9 posts. At $65 per panel and $20 per post, the listed materials total $700. This excludes installation supplies and labor.

Why gate location matters

An 80 ft run with a 4 ft gate leaves 76 ft of fencing. The tool gives 10 panels at 8 ft spans. If the gate leaves two 38 ft sections, each needs 5 panels; if it leaves 1 ft and 75 ft sections, separate rounding gives 1 plus 10, or 11 panels.

Choosing depths, rates, and product assumptions

Confirm product span, post positions, gate supports, and installation details for your chosen system. The calculator does not determine foundations, wind resistance, legal boundaries, or permission requirements. Prices cover the counted panels and posts only. Gate leaves, hardware, fasteners, footings, disposal, delivery, and labor need separate budget lines.

Common measurement and ordering mistakes

  • Treating the minimum combined panel count as a finished cutting and post layout.
  • Entering several unrelated runs as one length and losing the extra end posts.
  • Assuming a partial panel is reusable elsewhere without checking the product and actual cuts.

Frequently asked questions

Can it calculate several gates?

The field accepts a combined opening, but the post rule models one opening. Draw and count multiple gates separately.

Does it handle corners?

No. Calculate straight runs, then reconcile shared corner and end posts on the layout.

Are shorter end panels rounded up?

Yes, the combined panel estimate rounds up. Separate sections may need further rounding.

Can I enter meters?

Fence inputs are feet only. Convert measurements before entering them; the area tools’ unit selector does not apply here.

Why must the gate be shorter than the run?

A gate equal to or longer than the run leaves no positive fencing length for this calculator to estimate.
