Landscaping Cost Calculator

Build a budget using your own material and labor rates.

Multiply project area by the combined material and labor rates, add fixed charges, then apply contingency. For 200 sq ft at $5 per sq ft combined, plus $100 fixed and 10% contingency, the budget is $1,210.

Your project, in numbers.

Measure the length and width of the rectangle.

Rates and prices are illustrative. Use your product label or supplier’s quote.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the area covered by the quoted work. Use separate calculations when different parts of the yard have different rates.
  2. Enter your own material and labor prices per square foot in US dollars. The defaults are illustrative values, not local market prices.
  3. Combine relevant fixed charges, choose a contingency, and calculate. Compare the breakdown against the quote to catch missing items or duplicated charges.

Understanding the formula

Budget = (area × (material rate + labor rate) + fixed costs) × (1 + contingency % ÷ 100).

The formula first multiplies area by each variable rate. Materials and labor are added to fixed charges to create the subtotal. Contingency multiplies that entire subtotal, including fixed charges. The result therefore depends on both the scope and which items your rates include. It cannot infer delivery, taxes, disposal, or preparation that you have left out.

Worked examples

Basic project worksheet

For 200 sq ft, materials at $3 per sq ft cost $600 and labor at $2 costs $400. Add $100 fixed charges for a $1,100 subtotal. Ten percent contingency contributes $110, giving $1,210.

Compare a smaller footprint

Keeping those rates and fixed charges but reducing area to 180 sq ft gives $540 materials, $360 labor, and $100 fixed. The subtotal is $1,000; 10% contingency gives $1,100. This scenario saves $110 if the supplier’s rates and minimum charges remain unchanged.

Choosing depths, rates, and product assumptions

Use current written quotes for the same scope and product specification. A per-area rate is useful only when it describes the work consistently. Keep optional upgrades separate from the base scope and note any unpriced essentials. Contingency is a financial reserve; it does not automatically purchase extra material or replace a complete list of costs.

Common measurement and ordering mistakes

  • Adding delivery to fixed costs when an entered material rate already includes delivery.
  • Treating the example dollar values as typical local prices.
  • Increasing quantities for waste and then describing the contingency as the same material allowance without checking for duplication.

Frequently asked questions

Are these contractor quotes?

No. The output is a calculation from your inputs. Use the actual accepted quote to confirm scope and price.

Can I enter a supply-only project?

Yes. Enter zero for labor and include only the charges relevant to your purchase.

Does it include taxes?

Only if your rates or fixed charges include them. The calculator has no automatic tax lookup.

What if my quote is a lump sum?

Keep its actual amount in your worksheet. Converting it to an area rate is optional and can be misleading if scope changes.

How should I choose contingency?

Base it on unresolved details in your project. The default percentage demonstrates the formula and is not a universal recommendation.
