Plan seed and sod from the same measured lawn
Grass seed and sod use the same lawn footprint but different purchasing units. Seed is calculated by weight from a label rate per 1,000 square feet. Sod is calculated by dividing the required coverage by the coverage of a roll or slab, then rounding up to whole pieces. Start by subtracting beds, buildings, and paving from the lawn area.
Choose the right inputs
Choose the Grass Seed Calculator when you have a product rate for establishing or overseeding a lawn. Use the Sod Calculator when you know the actual roll coverage and price. A package’s new-lawn coverage can differ from its overseeding coverage, so select the instructions for your intended use. Neither tool chooses a grass species or predicts establishment.
From estimate to order
Keep measured quantities separate from purchasing allowances. Save the dimensions, units, product details, and supplier assumptions with your estimate so that you can explain or revise it later. Round up only when selecting the package size or order increment that you will actually buy. Check the result against a simple worked example before placing an order.
