Estimate the new layer, not the whole garden
Mulch and topsoil quantities depend on footprint and depth. The same garden bed can require very different volumes when you change the new layer from two inches to six inches. Measure what you intend to add and account for usable material already present. Keep separate beds with different depths as separate calculations.
Choose the right inputs
Use the Mulch Calculator for a surface layer and the Topsoil Calculator for soil volume. Both show cubic yards, cubic meters, and whole bags using the package volume you enter. Product weight is not a substitute for bag volume. Check the supplier’s description of loose or settled quantities before choosing an allowance.
From estimate to order
Keep measured quantities separate from purchasing allowances. Save the dimensions, units, product details, and supplier assumptions with your estimate so that you can explain or revise it later. Round up only when selecting the package size or order increment that you will actually buy. Check the result against a simple worked example before placing an order.
